In April 2016, my child, Em came out as a trans woman. She had started hormone therapy, and was well on her way to becoming the beautiful woman she was born to be.

I was thrilled when Em came out, because at last she felt at peace in her own body. We resolved to work together to advocate for trans folks: she, as a member of the community, and me as an ally, using my professional photography skills.

This is the last photo I took of her in San Francisco, in September 2016. In December 2016, she was killed in the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland.

After she was killed, I decided the work needed to continue. Thus, Trans Project LA was started.
